Question snippity snip snip... Bringing a line down to size.

I've got a new line which doesn't quite fit my reel properly even with only a couple of turns of backing - should i just snip some of the line off from the running line end, or would this affect the line's performance?

It's a shame, but it won't hurt that much !!! In all honesty I dont know why the smaller weight WF lines (2 and 3's) come in 30 yards/metres. Don't think I've ever had one out over 12

I wouldnt advise doing that YLad, better to get a reel which will accomodate the full line and a decent bit of backing....50 meters at least.

As long as the backing isn't up through the guides when casting, nope

Why?,if he shortened the line he could add to the length of the backing on the real anyway

Example Barrio GT140,try getting that lot on a reel that matches your rod and 100yrds of backing

I always cut my DT's for the river in half and I've never had the backing in the rings yet

Firstly!

How tight is the line and how much wont go on the reel??

It wont hurt to cut a few yards off the tail end if it's a WF line! you'll probably never see the backing while playing even a good sized fish?

I had to cut one of my DT lines to fit a reel . I never turn then around anyway.

We might not need the backing 99% of the time but its nice to have it there as a bit of security when the 'biggie' comes along....

Perhaps I should have asked the OP,I never realised we were talking about small stream fishing.

just to give a little more info, it's a #4 line, but the only reel it fits comfortably with backing is my #7 . I'd probably only need to take approx. 12 - 14 feet (4 metres ish) off to make it fit my #4 reel. My only worry is that using a bigger reel would screw up the balance of my outfit when stuck on the end of an 8ft #4 rod
