If you're just starting out, like me, Airflow Velocity. Cheap enough, 2 for £20 and positively fly out. This is after struggling with a Greys Platinum WF6 which was sold to me with my first kit. Could've put me off for life! No doubt I'll progress to the Greys, but in the meantime my casting's much more relaxed and productive with the Velocity. It's done in DTF4 as well, which is great for my little troot rod.

I test new fly lines pretty much every week. and Rio is my first choice everytime.

The best river line I've used is the Rio LT. Its slick so flies through the rod rings but its super supple so gives amazing presentations. and its moss coloured front taper makes it the perfect stealth line for wily wild fish.

The Rio gold is an awesome stillwater/reservoir line but the grays platinum xd floating line is on par with it.

Rio make top fly lines.
Cheers

The platinum XD has a modified taper suitable for distance casting, best suited for experienced casters

Back to your original question Rio lines for floating and Airflo's for sinking work

Pitsford Pirate. No gimmicks like spools and boxes, no BS, just great lines at a great price, free loops and superglue.

hello lewis, yes but at £60 out of reach for many fishermen, maybe rio have a large budget for R AND D or a high profit margin.

River, floaters J Norris wf4 and dt4 10 quid range:cant seem to get anything significantly better at these weights, superb value.
Lochs, Cortland or S.A.: good range and do the job well although the last Courtland was a dog.
Salmon, Guideline Dury Impact spey: Suit my rods and cast well.
I expect one season from a river line and 2/3 from a loch and salmon line.
