Default Grandfathers flies.

I Live in the Retford area of notts, and I'm looking for an avid fly man to look at my grandfathers hand tied flies from the 1940's and help me identify them.

Default Pictures

I've put some pictures in my profile thingy, but the two flies i've taken out and done individual pics on didn't like it. needs gentler hands than mine.

if you actually post the pictures in this thread, then it would be a lot easier for members to identify them and generate discussions. cheers

Not sure on the first one - would need a more detailed pic. The second one looks something akin to a fly called the Zulu.

Where did Gramps fish?

And yes you may get more of a response if post them on the thread as Burhan says.

Welcome to the forum in the meantime.

Second in from the right at the top is a coch-y-bonddu, which is an old beetle imitation and still works well today, can be fished wet or dry. Peacock herl body and a ginger hackle anything up to a size 12 if you fancy tying it.

For starters you've got Coch-y-Bonddu (or Brakenclock beetle if you're in Cumbria). It's an imitation of the bronze back and metallic green/black underbodied Garden Chafer:

Some sort of Black Pennel with a red tag added:

From left to right: Blue Zulu, a row of Red Tag's or KeeHee, maybe something in between. I've seen a lot of different tyings with different herl. Next row has some Black and Peac o ck Spiders, and what look like Alder Flies with a white wing, or they could be Coachmen. The yellow tailed row look like KateMclaren to me, but they've been through a hedge backwards - hard to tell!

I'll leave it at that. Hope that helps some - the next box is a right muddle, but I can see there's a few recognisable patterns in there.

For the rest of you to have a go (I picked the easy ones!). I copied the image location from your album, replaced the .html tag with .jpg - hey presto - embedded image:
