Pop into any of the local fishing shops and buy a ticket for the Strathmore Angling Improvement Association. £20, I think, for a season ticket and you get a map of the stretches you are allowed to fish. It also includes a fair bit of the Dean Water and the a wee bit of the Kirbett.

The lower stretches of the association water are pretty slow meandering bits, the further up up you go the more it improves.

I've had a wee bit of success around Wester Cardean but the area becomes an absolute jungle in the summer. Still to explore above Ruthven myself.

Cheers

Try the tackle shops in Blairgowrie, they'll be able to give you some pointers and probably permits.

Are you meaning for trout or salmon?

The trout ticket covers most / if not all of the river.

The bottom sections are very slow and canal like while the mid/upper sections (after Newtyle road) are faster stone fed river.

Some very big trout in it.

Also very good salmon fishing and Coupar Grange and Isla Bank (bottom beats) are some of the most productive salmon water of the whole Tay system. Best to focus under the steep banks were the current funnels the available flow...very hard to fish the deep slack water. Both beats have ghillies provided who know every inch of their beat and can make the difference between blanking and a great day.

Permits can be bought through the Fish Scotland website.

The lad who runs Kate Flemming fishing shop in Blairgowrie is very helpful and worth speaking to him re trout.
