Default Isle of Skye/Lewis fishing??

My wonderful wife has suggested going to the Isle of Skye for a week, maybe a few day trips to Lewis, YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's probably going to be August as she's a teacher, so, as I'm primarily a sea trout/salmon guy these days, can anyone recommend the best river fishing over there, not adverse to a bit of surf fishing to catch anything patrolling past, and not adverse to waving a rod into a loch from the bank either, not bothered by boat fishing at all.

Cheers in advance!!

I'm going to Skye, I'm going to Skye la la la la lahhhh!!!

The Snizort if there is water in it
The biggest salmon on record to come off the island was last year on that river

Aye, the Snizort is probably your best bet, as Peter Ross suggests.

You could also try Loch Duagrich which feeds it. Brownies and the occasional salmon. I guess it depends on how good the runs there are these days? Drive up the B885 out of Portree, use an O.S. map to judge a good place to park, then it's about 20 minutes downhill to the loch. Watch out for a particularly boggy bit, though - my mate went up to his neck in it! Oh how we laughed.

I used to visit Skye often up to 10 years ago, so I'm rather out of touch now.
However, if there's rain then have a look at the River Hinnisdal a wee bit past Eyre on the A87 to Uig.

I used to fish here and it's an interesting little spate stream. Walk the mile or so down to the sea loch even if there's no water in the river. Fish often used to nose their way up the estuary with the tide. I saw grilse there as well as sea trout and finnock, but only ever hooked the latter two.

It's a lovely place with a few trees along the banks, old ruins nearby and even a sheltered sandy spot down at the estuary on the north bank (Uig side), perfect for a lunch break. Park just before the road bridge in the big lay-by on your right (coming from Portree).

If you like a stiff walk, try Loch Fada above Camustianavaig, near Braes (B883), about 3 miles south of Portree. It's not far from the road but it's a steep climb! Brownies only, but beautiful fish. There's a good head of shrimp in the loch which helps them along - and it's downhill all the way home!

The Skeabost Hotel used to manage the Snizort and I think Ullinish Lodge had Duagrich (and L. Connan, a nice trout loch nearby). Nobody was looking after the Hinnisdal during the years I visited. I think that the Portree Angling Assoc. used to have L. Fada (Braes, as well as Storr), but their website doesn't mention it now, so maybe ask at Jensport in town?

Ah! This site has more up-to-date info on permits:

All the best.

For loch fishing the two Storr lochs north of Portree hold a good stock of brownies, mainly around 1/2 to 1 lb although every year a few larger fish are caught. The quality of the fishing from the bank can be very dependent on the water level in the lochs and the wind direction. Wading is possible around the margins in many locations (typically where it is a bit rocky), but you do need to watch out for areas of soft peaty bottoms else you'll be leaving your footwear behind.

For wild brownies Loch Connon in the middle of the island is a relatively short yomp across the tussocks is always worth a go. There are also some nice lochs of wild brownies down on the Armadale peninsula to the south (permits from the whisky shop at Isle Oronsay) especially over towards Ord.

For river fishing, as Peter Ross has said, the Snizort at Skeabost is your best opportunity although you'll need to be lucky with river levels and a falling river after recent rain to stand much chance. For sea trout, you are probably there at the right time for the River Sligachan (permits from the Sligachan Hotel). There are some other rivers on Skye which have sea trout and salmon runs, but they are all spate rivers are highly unpredictable. I suggest you contact Ian Stewart a local guide for advice.

Have good trip and tight lines.

Good advice guys! although some of the contacts have changed a bit. Derek Dowsett The Three Esses, has permits for some excellent beats on the river Snizort, and August has seen some good runs of fresh fish the last couple of seasons. The Glenmore beat of the Snizort is controlled by The Portree Angling Assoc.(they have a good website) with plenty of varied water to go at. Both, as mentioned, need a good bit water for good fishing. Sea trout runs last season were worryingly poor, but the Storr lochs fished their best for a few seasons. Maybe bump into you August, on the river a lot! Tight lines.

I'm going to Skye in June and will definitely be wetting a line. It's my first visit and would like a crack at catching a Sea Trout although some nice browies will keep me occupied.

I found this on-line - it might help.
