Default Wells Catfish (River Ebro, Spain)

Has any member any information about fly fishing for these monsters and can recommend what flies etc to try, as I am thinking of going to the Ebro this summer.
Can these monsters be caught on the fly?
Is the Ebro the place to go?

Hi mate, go to page 3 in the flyfishing for other species section, there's a post on there about catfishing on the Ebro

The largest catfish in Europe live in the Ebro but are mostly caught on fish or natural baits rather than artificial. You'd certainly know you'd got one on a fly rod though

'Matching the hatch' would be quite a challenege as the Ebro catfish would consider 4lb carp as hors d'oeuvres.

I'm going to try next week, so will let you know!
Fishing at Rija Roca and will use very large flies with lots of tinsel, size 6/0s, and a 12 wgt rod

Add a rattle to the fly and if allowed clonk! A spinner blade might be useful, I have often thought about big poppers at night as the cats will come up in the water.
The very biggest cats are not all in the erbro but it is definately the venue which gives you a chance to connect with one on the fly, if you get one at about a ton you may need an extension on you holiday lol jim

As others have said I'd imagine you would have the best chances with a dead fish or other dead bait though those things will eat just about anything tbh. If you're going to try on the fly then you will need a fast sinking line to get it down onto the bottom and heavyweight line. I'd say 10 or heigher line weight if possible because if you are bank fishing you'll need to cast far out and the biggest rod possible I'd say what you'd use for Salmon fishing on a large river like 15 or 16 footer and probably 30lb line or greater maybe even need wire. Also use the biggest pike type fly you can find because you could also end up catching other species like Carp or Zander instead unless you can get it down to the bottom and you're also night fishing because they're nocturnal they're not active in the day.
