Default Relatively new to fly fishing

Hi there everyone. I have only been fly fishing now for 1 season and cannot wait to get started into the new season. I am hopeing some people can give me some advice as I am still trying to find my way when it comes to knowing which flies to use in what months. I am from Northern Ireland and fish in the local reservoirs at Holywood for brown trout and rainbow trout. I have also started tying my own flies and it would be a great help if anyone could guide me as to what flies i should be tying for the up and coming months.
Thanks to all those in advance who reply.

Welcome to to the forum. You could start with "Matching the Hatch" by Pat O'Reilly. Also a search in the forum will bring up a lot of information.

Plenty of Irish guys on here and I'm sure they will be along to share the information you need.

Hi Eddie, I bought the book matching the hatch towards the end of last season and found it very useful. I read a few other books and didn't really find the information I was looking for. I tied a few flies from Matching The Hatch thinking that was what the trout where feeding on but when I went back within a few days to fish them nothing would take them. I would just like a general idea of what I should have in my fly box at certain times of the year so as I have some kind of a chance to catch a few fish. Cheers.

Different waters will have different characteristics with regard to hatches, so hopefully someone local can be more specific with answers. In terms of what you should carry generally, have a look at this thread. It gives a wide range of opinions on folks favourite selections. However you will see a definite pattern (forgive the pun) in what is used.

5 flys
