Default Furled Leaders (again!)

Hi all

Ive been experimenting with furling my own leaders lately and had come up with a few variations based on 0.10-0.12mm mono. My preferred design was going to to be a 9foot 5 step leader, with each section reducing in length by about 8%. (i know they are usually shorter but I like as long a leader as possible). On testing it on the water recently, I can say that the turnover was very good, however it seemed to 'hinge' at the 3rd step, the only way I could decsribe it is that the rear end of the leader turns over and lays out straight on the water, but then the rest of the leader then follows milliseconds later kind of 'pivoting' at the end of the section that has just laid down.

Has any one any ideas why it is doing this, as I'm keen to continue down the r'olling my own' route.

Regards

Rover

Ask mrtrout, I'm sure he'll be able to help.

Your 'Mono' Furled Leader will Flash & Splash. Try using thread. Furle under tension with an equal distance between each step/post. The overal reduction in length between twist and final furle should be aprox. 10%.
Given the length you require, ensure that each section has the correct number of wraps (taper ) in order to ensure turnover along the entire length. This will provide you with a Butt section that is able to transfer the casting energy down the leader. Your tippet must be compatable with the end of your leader.
Hope this helps,PM me if I can help further,
Rod Dibble.

I've been "rolling my own" too, with mono, using just three steps. I find getting a good turn-over is entirely dependant on my inconsistent casting.

I used furled leaders made with uni thread until is discovered twisted mono leaders. I feel the twisted mono is a much better approack and you can find instructions on line.

Default Furled mono

Mono furled are really good for saltwater, pike and as a midge tip attached to a floating line on the reservoirs.Yes you can simply spin up a singapore style mono leader but I prefer the precision offered by the custom makers.Only time I spin a short one up is for clear tip mono core lines or for heavy duty saltwater.
Thread furled for dries/emergers and some nymphing.

Adding another question to this thread, what do you rate as the best way of attaching the furled leader to your fly line?

I've been giving mrtrout's furled leaders some extensive use this season and cannot fault the presentation they provide whether I use them for fishing a single dry or a duo set up.

Daniel...I attach mine loop to loop (mini-con on fly line) and also use loop to loop for attaching the tippet to the furled leader as recommended, but would also be interested to hear how others attach theirs.

Mick.

The jury is still out for me, after a couple of seasons using furled leaders I have now gone back to knotless tapered mono leaders and seem to be having more success in tempting wary fish to the surface. But of course that may be down to my general lack of casting skills!

With furled leaders I sometimes attach them permanently. First I strip an inch or so of the coating from the tip of the fly line and make a loose overhand knot in the core. I then pass the butt of the furled leader through the knot in the core and pull it a little tighter. I then make a three turn uni/nail knot around the fly line with the leader and ease it down to the knot in the core before applying full pressure to both knots. If you get it right the turns of the leader's uni knot should (just) slip off the coating of the line and sit snugly against the knot in the core. To finish I trim all loose ends fairly close and push a short length of red shrink tube over the whole knot and shrink it down, nice and neat!
