Over the last couple of days i have been involved in a schools science event, a group of us lab rats took a variety of things covering many biological disciplines along to try and corrupt young minds.
as well as the DNA/protein molecular biology that is my bread and butter, i popped down to the itchen and took some kick samples along.. set them up in a tank with a powerhead for flow and an airstone to keep them oxygenated, then we took stuff out and put it under microscopes for the kids to identify using simple keys. The kids loved looking at the nymphs etc .. well this afternoon i had to make the 50 mile round trip to return the samples to the river, a work mater who is a coarse angler said to me joking that he best come along "health and safety and all that..." i agreed, tipping him the wink..
the local tackle shop was out of maggot for him so i told him he would have to slum it with a fly rod in his hand.. well 5 mins worth of casting 101 and i set him up with a bead headed GRHE under a pimp, told him if it does anything other than drift to strike.. first cast went well, he even managed a heavy handed mend.. at the end of the drift he lifted off and put the leader in a bush!! A little mickey taking followed whilst he untangled the mess... He finally made his second cast and within seconds he was into a grayling of around 3/4 of a pound.. happy days.. he finished the brief 2 hour session with 3 fish and 40 tangled

he said he might eve come back and try some dry fly fishing !!
