I went to Dolgellau in May last year - and thought that was far too early. If I were to return, I'd leave it till June - it was far too cold for insect life, and really even too early for herling although I had two very small ones on the river. I did much better on a day on Tal-Y-Llyn, around 20 browns of all sizes for the day on traditional over-the-front loch style with a soft 11 foot rod, short line rolled out and dibbled back across the wave - took most on a Kate McLaren tied bushy on top dropper of three fly cast. Others came to a Shipmans fished static when the wind dropped, which was quite a lot that day.
