Ive lived close to it all my life and fished it for almost 40 years so I know a bit about it.In my opinion the trout fishing has been in decline for a long time now, there seems to be a fraction of the fish there once was and all does not seem right with it to me.The public walkway down its length will not be doing us any favours, much of the cover has been removed and it is difficult to get any peace when fishing. There are still fish to be had though along the whole length of the river,I would suggest you just get out and fish it and draw your own conclusions.

I'll probably fish from roseburn to cannonmills, i feel the further up the better but there are mroe dog walkers and jay-kays. I had a walk along i noticed a few strechtes that were only accessible with waders i will probably hit them. I used to fish up near the dell and slateford but i got sick of dog walkers and passers by telling me where to fish and what to do. I once got told a stretch i was fishing was to muddy the woman was adamant that there was no fish to be caught, yet i had just caught about 3 trout before she came.

Wee jimmy is right i was ok years ago but its been raped over the last few years with the non indeginous residents of Edinburgh killing everything that swims.
I fished it regulary from Colinton Dell up but havent been on it for years everyone i speak to who still fishes it moans about how it has declined.
I believe they still stock it but the fish last about a week once in the water.
The vouluntary baliffs have a thankless task there. No holds barred fishin!!!
If I was to fish it now it would be with waders to get to the bits that the deperados cant get a spinner to.

Was out for the first time on the WoL yesterday evening - despite some initial misgivings, had a great 2 hours. Saw a lot of fish rising, landed 2 and lost 3, all in about 200m. As far as I could tell, they weren't stockies, and they were certainly very keen to inhale a sz 14 ptn.

Lost about 5 flies too and got very wet feet. Waders may be an idea...

Despite the heavy traffic, there are plenty of secluded spots, and it's a real pleasure to explore. I imagine it only gets better the further upstream you go.

Season's not opened yet! Unless it has changed, the WoL opens 1st April

Good to hear you had a few fish though

Oh - I had no idea. I assumed 15 march.

Oops.

Well, I certainly wasn't the only one!

No surprise you weren't the only angler out. Have you picked up a permit? The rules are on it as well as the season! It's free.
