Thumbs up blank busters

Has anyone used Sandy Dicksons blank buster buzzers. I bought a set today. I must say they are expertly tied. The uv shows up really well. But are they as good as they say?

Used the blank busters today. I still think it's confidence thing. I did catch on one & sandy was right the trout take gentle then smash the line when they realise they are hooked. I also took trout on other flys.

I had a look at the "blank buster buzzers" at last years BFFI and had a good chat with Sandy about them......... A really nice chap, entertaining and clearly a good fisherman.
Bloomin £££ but he's a british businessman who needs to make a living. The flies were all well tied, good proportions and look like they'd last!!!
He obviousy didnt disclose the "secret" but here's my take on them:
Tie you buzzer very slim to represent reality, 8/0 or 14/0 if you can get it.
Use the finest wire possible to give a realistic segmented body.
For the thorax / hot-spot / head, begin with a glossy white thread base and cover with your chosen UV treated thread, to greatly enhance its luminescence (probably the wrong word and spelling ) compared to tying over a dull or mat colour as we may normally do.
The jury's still out on the whole UV thing for me. Blank busters certainly won't gaurantee a catch............ However, my favourite and most confidence fuelling buzzer does use a UV rib

Thumbs up

I know what you mean rodders. I was chatting with Craig Barr last year about the uv fly. I tried some last year & caught as many without the uv. I caught up with Craig recently & he asked if i had anymore success with the uv patterns, i told i didn't think so. He has as most pros do, a new line of flies coming out. I must say having seen them first hand the buzzers look the part. Like yourself i'm not fully convinced about the whole uv craze.

As an addition. UV light is outside our (human) visible spectrum. Under normal lighting these materials show either a feint purple hue or appear just standard. Shine a UV light on them and they reflect a bright glow.......
Do salmonoids see this and is there a natural food source which reflects UV light?
I've got a really strong urge to collect samples and wave a UV torch aboot now.

That would be very interesting to see if any food source gave off uv. Very few flys we use actually resemble the fly it derives it's name from. I have tying books dating back to the 1890's. I bet if i were allowed to use the feathers & furs, for the flys in the books, they would catch just as many fish today. Maybe more as some patterns are no longer used.
