Default First Avington Visit

Hi All
I'm going to visit Avington for the first time on Sunday 6th and would appreciate some tips from your good selves, I'm used to fishing small clear still waters like Chalk Springs is it similar tactics at Avington?

Cheers Paul

Question Right place

Are you sure it's called 'Avingdon' and not 'Avington'

Tactics....

First, pray for a bright day... at the moment the light can make stalking difficult, so the more sun you have, the better day you'll have.

DO NOT fish blind. if you do, you will end up with a bag of nice fish, but probably nothing special.

keep mobile, keep looking into the water (with polaroid sunglasses) for that big fish. under trees are good spots and the fish can be in the margins, so don't cast for the moon.

Use heavy flies to get down to the fish, don't strip it over their heads.

Concentrate on the following areas:

Lake 1 - generally the further up the lake you go, the better the fishing. the top half is significantly better than the bottom half.

Lake 2 - at this time of year, the fish can be anywhere. DO NOT ignore having a look under the huge oak at the top end, there's a deep hole here and there's always fish. similarly the bottom end where the inflow is, that little bay often has a surprise in it.

Lake 3 - The bottom end closest to Lake 3 is best. it's deep here and if you look between the 2 bushes on the right hand corner as you look down the lake you will almost always find a double. - i had 8 doubles last year from between these 2 bushes!!

Enjoy!

Thanks Browniebasher,
I'm really looking forward to it, are any particular fly colours that stand out there?
Cheers Paul

I catch the majority of my fish there on black or light green marabou tailed damsels. if you don't have any ask for some 'down 'n dirty' damsels in the shop. they won't let you down. If you tie your own, put a lot of weight in the fly and add a good pinch of marabou for the tail.

Avington fish are not difficult fish, so most patterns will work, the skill, is trying to winkle out one of the biggies and at this time of year it's not easy!!

Thanks again,
I've tied up some heavy damsels for Chalks Springs so I'll start with those.

I fished it a couple or so seasons ago now,not easy fishing but managed to winkle out a couple of nice ones on a size10 damsel with a split shot head and a WAEF,this was on lakes 2 and 3 using a catapult cast. This was in the summer months though
