hi guys last summer i caught a few brown trout jn a stretch of river near me but they were all small, can you get runs or pools which only hold small fish or will there be some larger fish in there and will they still be there or do they move on to fresh pastures.

Default Brown trout

When once brown trout move from their feeder stream (birthsite) they tend to take up station within a small area for most of their lives.
However, during spawning they will move upstream onto the spawning beds, but back into station afterwards, they also tend to have a pecking order, with the stronger fish taking the best feeding spots at the head of the flow.
Other exceptions are the pollution of the river with Rainbow trout, when these tend to gradually migrate their way down stream, similar to steelhead, and take the resident browns with them (total disaster for us).
The size of the fish is relative to the qualitity and quantity of food and level of predation, not age of the fish, chalkstreams having more food, tends to hold larger and more plentiful specimins.
It's often difficult to get through the smaller fish to find the larger examples, but still lots of fun (just use a smaller rod eg #2 6 or 7 foot rod)

This is an over simplified explanation, but having worked in an office for 25 years overlooking a prime Brown Chalkstream, I had plenty of opportunity to observe their habits.

Hi,

If you're talking about the Wear the fish will start to move upstream from around August onwards, leaving small fish in the pools.

The upside is that the Wear has spectacular runs of large seatrout from April onwards (peak June/July).
So big fish (double-figure fish are not at all uncommon, and these are wild fish) are there to be had.

I've seen some big wild browns in the Wear (3lb+), but never connected.

You will find that brownies move about quite alot.
Sometimes they just move from their resting lies to their feeding lies within the one pool. Other times they will move from further downstream to feed/spawn.
My local little river, at this time of year, has virtually no fish in it as it is so cold and so little food. As the season progresses the fish move in from downstream.
In more fertile rivers, as stated, they are more likely to hang about in the one place.
