Default Chicken wire 2 Alex's fly lines 0.

Casting at a fishery the other day, i was on a floating pontoon, and the line got caught in some loose chicken wire that had been nailed to teh pontoon for grip. i gave it a yank to free it, and continued casting. made my last haul and released the line, to watch the fly, tippet, and 30 yards of PP's finest launch through the end ring leaving me a perfectly cut end of line. Later the same day on another pontoon, i tangled the line in some very loose chicken wire, adn couldnt safely bend over to release it, as it was on the outside of the pontoon. only thing for it, give it a yank and bo llocks!! the line cut through again.

Has anyone else seen this at other fisheries? I know the wire's only put there to keep the pontoons safe, but if it's going to slice through lines, it gets bloody expensive! I don't blame the line one iota as the chicken wire is like a razor but there must be lots of damaged and broken lines about because of this... please make sure the wire's safely hammered down...

Thanks

Alex

Stripping basket.

Like this - I use it for the sea, but also for pike and any other time - no more line round my feet for me. Maybe not if fishing trout streams, but otherwise.

Bad luck, Alex. I am almost starting to wish that fisheries would stop installing those little platforms or pontoons altogether. Either, seeking to do the right thing, they install the chicken wire but don't maintain it, leading to your experience; or they don't, as at Avon Springs, and at this time of year the platforms are permanently damp, have a film of algae, and are more slippery than a slippery thing...potentially, embarrassing scenes, falling in, broken rods, cracked bones.... I now often avoid them and stand either alongside the platforms or in the gaps between.

TL, I think line trays are great for SWFF or when wading from the shore of a big reservoir, but they are less useful in river or small stillwater fishing when you are frequently on the move.

I've been looking at line trays for the same reasons.
Main bugbears are:
- Standing on loose line on deck. When chicken wire present = damaged line.
- Sharp rocks at certain stillwaters (mainly ex- UU reservoirs).

Lost a Di7 (all bar last 20ft of running line) before Xmas when cut on sharp rocks.

Considering the IKEA Forsiktig step stool as it's a similar shape to the Orvis one (but only £2 !)

It's a pain in the harris. I had to spend the rest of the day casting with about 20 foot of line and backing, as an improvised shooting head. didn't really work, but was OK for an hour or so!!
