You don't say what size the river is, which will dictate a bit as to what rod an dreel you could go for. I will give a couple of suggestions:
For river trouting on a medium sized to large river a #5 will do you fine. 9 feet if you have a clear river to work - some will say 9'6" - splitting hairs, we need to start somewhere! Maybe even a 9 foot #6, but that is over gunning it a bit, but you could use it elsewhere too - bt you already have reservoir gear so you don't need toworry about the bigger stuff.
If it is small brook type river you can go down the scale to anything between a 6' 6" #1 on tiny little carrier streams 2 foot - 3foot across, through to an 8' 6" #4. It will depend on the amount of undergrowth you are going to cope with and the width of the river - and how much backcast you have.
You can always split the rod and just cast with the top half if you find a pool heavily overgrown. Tuck the reel and bottom half under your arm, cast with the top bit, then put it back together to fish. I have done this plenty of times. Cheaper than buying a special outfit.
My own choce for most river situations is an 8' 6" #4 the reel doesn't matter that much, the fish arenn't big and you won't be burning out any drags on them!
