41 views and not a single piece of suggestion or advice. from anyone. That is terrible.

You don't say what size the river is, which will dictate a bit as to what rod an dreel you could go for. I will give a couple of suggestions:

For river trouting on a medium sized to large river a #5 will do you fine. 9 feet if you have a clear river to work - some will say 9'6" - splitting hairs, we need to start somewhere! Maybe even a 9 foot #6, but that is over gunning it a bit, but you could use it elsewhere too - bt you already have reservoir gear so you don't need toworry about the bigger stuff.

If it is small brook type river you can go down the scale to anything between a 6' 6" #1 on tiny little carrier streams 2 foot - 3foot across, through to an 8' 6" #4. It will depend on the amount of undergrowth you are going to cope with and the width of the river - and how much backcast you have.

You can always split the rod and just cast with the top half if you find a pool heavily overgrown. Tuck the reel and bottom half under your arm, cast with the top bit, then put it back together to fish. I have done this plenty of times. Cheaper than buying a special outfit.

My own choce for most river situations is an 8' 6" #4 the reel doesn't matter that much, the fish arenn't big and you won't be burning out any drags on them!

Kev believe it or not that is quite difficult to answer.now you say its for the river well the length of rod is normally governed by the ammount of bankside cover ie no good trying to cast a 10 ft rod if you are going to be catching the tree canopy.I fish with a 5 weight rod but some people like 4 or even 3weight rods or even lighter, again the weight forward side of things will depend if the river you are going to fish is prone to be a bit windy if it is you might struggle a bit to cast the lighter gear that is why i fish with a 5 weight its not to heavy but it will allow you to cast if it is windy.I hope this helps. If you are really not sure take a walk down the river when the season starts see if you can see anybody fishing and ask their advice or try the nearest tackle shop to the river and i am sure they will be more than willing to help you.

If you want to get rid of the shine on a rod the easiest/quickest way is to rub it lightly with a plastic pan-scourer.

I'm not sure it makes much difference - perhaps in bright sunshine, but there are so many other factors which will put fish off in bright sunshine that I'm just not convinced it makes much difference.

I know Richard seems to have a black obsession but in reality if you wish to give the rod a coat of matt varnish.

thanks for the replys folks, the size of river i am going to fish, is only about 30yds wide at the widest part if that and can be fished from both banks and plenty of room for wading aswell, there is some tree cover at certain parts but not to much of a problem, due you think a 9ft 4 weight would be ok to use

Don't know what the best is but I use a Grey's Streamflex 8' 6", 4 weight and a Lamson Litespeed 2. Makes me happy!
