Default Spring around the corner

Interesting forecast this week, for my area at least.

After an increase in temperature on Wednesday, and a band of rain, Thursday and Friday are going to feel quite different, and very much as though spring has arrived.

Having started fly-fishing at the end of Autumn, just before the snow and ice cut that pleasant season short, and dragged my lures slowly through cold life-less still-waters, I'm wondering what difference to expect as the weather suddenly warms.

Will there be lots of insect life galvanised into action?

Will the trout be topping instead of hiding down deep?

Should I start stripping lures back, rather than twitching them slowly along the bottom?

Should I change from lures to other patterns I've hardly used?

Or should I can the excitement, and give the water a chance to warm up before dancing around the banks like a demented spring lamb?

Yes as the weather warms up more insects will be about so alter your fly choice to suit ie buzzers, diawl bachs, damsels, dry's etc

Yes you will see more topping as fish take nymphs just before they hatch, again this is where nymphs come into play ( in extremes of heat, either fish slow and deep or if like me don't bother )

I'd start using more nymphs and dry's

No i wouldn't give up,try something like a olive Apps on a intermediate line ( works a treat )

Cheers Neil

I do like it when things are different, and new challenges and opportunities present themselves.
