Default North West Leicestershire

Morning all... just wondered if anyone new of any decent (free) spots to fish north west Leicestershire way (either course or fly )...

I'm out in Whitwick, and have been trying to find info on the River Sence, which starts close to me - but no luck so far, lol...

Any advice warmly welcomed, and thanks in advance

Nick.

Hi Nick,

The river Sence has been taken over by a club and worked on/stocked from Shackerstone dowstream. If they are still taking new members be prepared to pay £££s. The upper stretch is tiny, but may hold a trout or two. Find out who the landowner is and give him a call. He may be happy to let you fish in return for a bit of work, or just keeping an eye on the pheasants in Autumn.

For inexpensive fishing the canals are good. The Ashby canal around Snarestone is coarse fishing, with a few suprises. That costs something like £15 for the year from the Measham AC. We tend not to shout about good fishing spots on here, but if you talk to any of the lads fishing they'll tell what's in and where to fish. It can be fished with fly as long as you can roll-cast. I've had most species out of there on fly, apart from carp.

The river Soar around Leicester sounds an interesting fish too. Have a browse on the forum and look for posts from Skateboard Dave who is something of an expert.

A few years back I lived in Barton under Needwood and found a fair bit of the upper Trent that only required a word with a farmer to get a days free fishing. The Tame coming out of Tamworth looked nice, but I think a lot of that required the parting of cash.

Have you ever fished thornton? cheapest ticket its only £13.50 1 fish ticket with catch and release you dont have to kill either then if you want a boat its another tenner. for the bank would recommend waders, If you fancy a day there give me a pm i can do most weekends just not this weekend but if given notice can do week days just need to get day off work, im fairly new to the sport so we could teach each other a thing or too,

cheers mitch

Default Sence

Nick,

If you are looking for free trout fishing I think you may be quite disappointed around this end of the world(Midlands).

River Sence is looked after by the Gopsall Fly Fishing Club, see my signature for a link to their website. The river is a dream to fish and contains trout and grayling, its not free but its worth every penny, as there is little trout water to fish around the Midlands.

If you want some proper small stream fishing then the Peak Passport scheme now includes a piece at the top end of the Sence for a reasonable amount of money.

Matt

thanks for the reply, Matt... not too fussed about the type of fishing.. I've only ever fly fished for trout...

I take it the Gopsall FFC chrges rather a few £££'s? there's no mention of cost on the website (that I could see) although I'd be happy to pay if its worth it...

I'll check out the passport scheme - thanks

some parts of thornton you dont need waders just a pair of wellies and some you can fish from the bank, from about april you are best from a boat as the fish move out. just give me a pm if you want to go one time
