I used to work in the Industry and all mags for export cost a bit, not just fishing mags. In the USA they add tax to the price as well.

When you look at the cost of Trout and Salmon, £3.70 I think, mags aren't cheap over here either. Pick up 2 or 3 of them and you won't get much change out of a tenner. The annual subs for online mags such as total flyfisher are exceptionally reasonable but you can't read an on line mag in the bath .

Oh aye, count yerself lucky Charlie, my wife never buys me fishin' mags .

When I buy my French fly fishing magazine in Luxembourg I pay 75 Cents more than in France and 25 cents less than in Belgium. Cost of the magazine for me is Euro 6 Please bear in mind that nearly all magazines and books in Luxembourg are imported and that nowhere in Luxembourg am I more than 35 Km from a border! Just goes to prove that import duties make no sense.

If there's a State or Local 'Sales Tax' you would; live in a State like Oregon (no sales tax) you won't. But we're far more the exception to the rule.

Interesting part is both Washington and California (to south/north of us) have the tax. Washington State takes a 'longer view' about Oregon Residents. Close to 2/3rds (2.5'ish million) of the State lives with an hour and a half drive of the Washington boarder. Fully knowing no one from Oregon (in their right mind) would buy anything in Washington (add close to another 10% to cost) the tax is waived.

You`d think with all the space taken up with advertising they could cut the cost

My own experience came from Houston airport and it was a little bit of a shock.

Let's face it. A fishing mag is a pure luxury item and the price is determined by what the punters will pay for their luxuries, which is usually a lot.
Most of the average fishing mag is of little interest and too much (IMO) taken up with reports from correspondents of days out that they had on venues I've never heard of and will never visit. An occasional article sparks interest, a new method that you try out once, doesn't work and you forget about. Most of what you learn is from other fishermen and from trial and error. A mag is just another bit of retail therapy, a dummy for when you cant fish, a chinese meal that leaves you feeling empty 2 hours later. Of course you have to pay over the odds for it.
(cant wait for the next issue of TFF)
