As a fisherman returning after a long absence, some things are as they were,,, but others are a bit new!

Does anyone care to explain to me about blobs, and also indicators. I am sure they were not common practice last time I was fishing, and I certainly havent used them.

If someone could give me an overview, how to fish them, when they work, why they are used etc?? I would be very grateful.


I got a collection of flies to start me off, and it includes a variety of 'blobs'. They look more like sweets than flies

if you go to search you will find plenty of past threads on this subject-people dont seem to want to get drawn into these subjects

Know how you feel, back after a 15 year break and I'm still trying to get my head round a few of the new 'terms and tactics'
Guess it's a bit easier now, just have to use the internet rather than waiting a month for the next Trout Fisherman magazine to come out!

They are the tools of satan. Wouldn't be without me blobs!

I keep reading about how deadly they are, but apart from an occasional take when using a FAB to support a washing line, I don't have much joy with them. Tried stripping them, twitching them, fishing them static. tried them solo and in tandem.
Good for spotting where your leader is when you've caught the bushes behind you.

I didn't have a clue about indicators and latest tactics until I took a guided tuition for a day last year. I also had quite a big gap. The lesson is very useful. Even if things like casting comes back to you naturally all the other help and advice is extremely useful. The indicators can be quite good for detecting takes if you are fishing through the water with droppers.

Simple answer..........

Blobs = The latest must have fish catcher.

Indicator = A float.

I've never been a blob, booby or fritz man but saw the 3lber do some real damage with an orange fritz fished off a bung. Deadly in the right hands.

All three court controversy especially in the uk. Blobs and Boobies-named after what they look like do not resemble anything a trout will ever eat in its life yet they take fish-stockies especially. Read the fishery rules though as they are so effective some fisheries have banned them. The indicator is something purists do not like saying it's like using a float. Quite simply it can be a large bushy dry fly used to support one or more wet nymphs NZ style or as the washingline for which Blobs abd Boobies are useful-Boobies to keep the line off the bottom and snagging up. A useful compromise is to purchase a unibobber manufactured by Turrall and tie your dry fly around it as it has a hole to thread the tying thread through. So what's wrong with catching trout and being able to see when a trout takes your fly?
