It might be best if you try each weight before you buy to see which weight you prefer to cast with, but if you cannot do this then I would say get a 7wt. As for lines i can recommend you pitsford pirate off here, he does fanastic lines at fantastics prices.

If your rod is a 6/8 I would go with a 8# as it will help with rod loading and casting, just my 2p's worth.

Thanks for the help so far. As a beginner I don't really know what type of lines to get I have been told to get a wtf floating and a wtf slow sink would this be a good start? I will track pitsford pirate down to get some lines once I know what to get!

You should probably get a floater and an intermediate in 7 or 8 weight - PP can supply both those and if you pm with him will probably advise which size would be better for your particular rod.

On multi rated rods, I tend to ignore the lower ratings in most instances; therefore would suggest an #8, although would be helpful to know what rod it is to better advise.

Especially as a beginner, you'll not want to be struggling to load the rod with lines that are not suited.

At the end of the day it's all down to personal taste and preference and appreciate not always easy to try before you by.

Tightlines!

The Pirate.
