Default Dilemma - Sea trouting in Argentina

Here's my dilemma

Half of me wants to shell out the best part of three grand for a week in the middle of nowhere fishing for monster sea trout - the other half thinks i'm a blinking nutter. (And my other-half thinks i'm a bloody loony - god knows why she married me!)

Details of the trip are here

Anyway - someone persuade me!!! Is it worth it? Is the hype true?

Or will I end up going loopy spending the week with weirdo Americans and their seven foot rods

Not been myself, but high on my list. If you have the chance to go, then go for it for sure.

P.S. Why post the link to an auction for the trip, surely you must see how suspicious that looks? I'd say you'll get a bit more credibility if you remove the auction link and just supply the information for the trip. Wouldn't want people getting the wrong idea now would we.

Genuinely don't understand what you mean?

---------- Post added at 09:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:47 PM ----------

Am posting link to auction because
1. It is pretty cheap (have looked into it) and
2. It has no bids - so potentially bargain and
3. Am I missing something - is the Atlantic Salmon Trust a dirty word all of a sudden?

or...

4. Are you not supposed to add links? (I have never posted on this forum before - is that bad form?)

It just that, to the casual reader it may appear you are actually promoting the auction, rather than considering the trip. I'm not saying that's the case, just letting you know how it 'may' appear.

Tell folks a little about yerself P-S? Would allow them to assist in advising perhaps?

Are you in the 'had loads out of various spots previously' like StuartP or just a couple on a hol's trip to West Wales like muggins here?

Probably worth learning to cast properly first... by that I mean with serious sink tips or sinking heads... in wind.

It is very open and very windy, mostly downstream, most afternoons. The food is superb though.

"Las Buiteras Lodge is located beside the beautiful Rio Gallegos River, providing fantastic sea trout fishing for fish averaging 8 - 15lbs"

thanks

I am just like most of the people here

Did some fishing as a youngster - coarse and some fly fishing - and a bit of a dab hand at the vice.

Got back into it in my late thirties - then a chance business trip got me some sea trout fishing on the Eden - then again on the North Esk. More drinking than fishing really - but I always think they go hand in hand. Since then I have done some more here and there and -with the big five O on the horizon - and with all and sundry telling me I should do something big/mad/once-in-a-lifetime - I thought I would try to arrange a trip to Alaska. Then a few of days ago - one of my buddies showed me the Argentine lot on the auction.

Good advice about casting - I need to brush up on that - as I have never actually had a lesson in my life (never needed to cast further than a rough chuck). There's a bloke near Guildford who runs a shop and casting school I think.

The shop you are thinking of is probably Peter Cockwill's in Albury. Peter fishes in Argentina and Chile most years and would probably be able to give you good advice, as well as the casting lessons.

The hype is more than true.
Rio Gallagos sea trout fishing is only surpassed by rio grande, but that is only because the numbers are slightly higher. not the size.
costs associated for one week vary at time of season.
last week january through february to first week march are prime time.
mid feb being best (historically)
prices change accordingly.
2500 to 3500 quid all in, excluding flights being average costs.
place your bets accordingly.
regards
bert
