Default Are There Any American Fly Fishing/Tying Magazines To Compare With Uk Magazines?

Hi Guys. I've just recently purchased three of the monthly uk fly fishing magazines I get(okay one I get one as a subscription) and find them excellent for content and with lots of up-to-date fly patterns to tie and try, but does anyone know of any american ones that can compare?. I've tried one or two-even bought a few at Cabelas outfitters when I was over there last summer, but generally they were rather thin with fewer pages and little content-most space taken up with advertising. Anyone know of any that are any good?

I used to get U.S. Fly Fishing & Fly Tying Journal, no relation at all to a U.K. publication with a similar name, that was okay but nothing special. Flyfisherman ditto, but as you say loads of ads & articles split into 3/4 or more sections to allow for the ads. Haven't had Fly Tyer for a few years, since it was taken over & called "American Angler" it's now gone back to its original name though. Fly Rod & Reel, see above. The Drake, I gather is supposed to be very good.

Fly Fish In Salt Waters is pretty neat (US publication) but we now have Adventure Fisher over here which is comparable.

Smile American Mags

Hi Flytier07
I had planned a fishing trip to Montana 2 years ago and happened across an American magazine localy called Fly Fisherman which covered a lot of American rivers/creeks. Bit pricy, bit thin but good for a one or two offs.
Checkout Fly Fisherman | The premiere online destination for fly fishing!

Default Hello Allingbri

Yeah-I bought a "Fly Fisherman" some while ago, but for content and price I was quite disappointed. Bythe way did you ever get to Montana? Went through there last June and the rivers, etc. were so high they looked unfishable, but it was tempting to stop and have a go and probably would have if I'd had more time.

Fly Tyer was the boy, great mag but only for tyers.
Eveything's online now, two of the best are THISISFLY & CATCH, very young, trendy hip and cool, unlike the majority of the UK angling public who seem to be getting older and older.

They should never have gotten rid of the Coarse fishing close season!

The Drake mag seems to be top of the newer titles, some funny writing and great video competition every year.

I subscribe to fly fishing in saltwaters, which is good but extremely thin for a bimonthly mag -so won't bother to renew.
I used to browse the magazine shelves in the u.s to kill time when I was on work trips over there, and I think most of them are top heavy with adverts.
Nothing can beat our own "Fly fishing and Fly Tying" mag. (maybe I'll win one of their competitions now!)

Don't knock us Oldies-you'll be there yourself one of theses days! Mind you if there wasn't a closed coarse fishing season we'd never get our flies tied up, would we?

I agree-I enjoy Fly Fishing and Fly Tying very much but find Total Fly Fisher better value. If you figure out how to win one of their competitons please let me know as I've been trying for almost four years now and never won a b----y sausage though I've won stuff on other mags-even coarse fishing ones!? That's FF&FT-not TFF as I Have won stuff from that one!
