Default Minnow Patterns

Fished a new loch yesterday with a couple of mates in a bang on Southerly with no luck. This was partly down to the wind which was gusting over 30mph, rain and high banks.
However one of lads went back to the car for his spinning rod and was into a 4lb'er within the hour. It was caught on a light blue with spots minnow imitation about three inches long.
So as we never seen any fish moving and none were seen rising the night before which was very calm and glasslike i'm thinking the fish are predators and would like any suggestions for flies that may tempt them?
We tried Dabblers, Silver Invictas and Alexandria's with no luck and were thinking that a size 10 was too small.

Cheers, Calum
