Default Tippet ring knot...

Hi all, I just wondered if anyone can recommend a knot for attaching a tapered leader and a length of tippet to a tippet ring. I made one up last night using blood knots like I use to tie my flies onto my tippet but the first time I gave it a tug the leader end came off by the knot, I did it again and it seemed to hold the second time when giving it a tug but I don't think I've got much confidence in it. Is there a better/stronger knot to use in this situation?

Many thanks, Rob.

Me i use a grinner ( uni ) knot same with flies, just make sure the tippet rings you use have rounded edges,Roman Moser ones are probably the best around

Thank you both for the replies - never thought about tucking the blood knot I'll give that a go.

I'll have a look at the Grinner knot Neil - the rings do look quite rounded so hopefully they will be OK.

Thanks again, Rob.

Default tippet rings & knots

Hello Rob

Take the tip and be sure about the rings as there were some on the market which cut the leader.Being not really certain I cannot tell you the make but as suggested Roman Mosers are safe.

Knots have been suggested and some well used knots do tend to slip on bigger diameters.Leader diameter and material can also make a difference here.I have used the uni but also find the simple and quick to form Davy Knot to hold fast on tippet rings.Google it up for SBS/video.Davy is good for your flies also especially smaller sizes.

To be fair the blood should work but somtimes you have to take special care cinching it up so it locks down.To tie onto a solo ring I usually thread some mono through to hold the ring with doubled mono so I can pull up the knot when I attach the leader.

Best JP

I use the grinner/uni knot to attach tippet to ring and tippet to hook. Also use the double grinner on leaders without tippet rings to join line and create droppers.

I've found the grinner to be much more reliable than the blood or tucked half blood knot. Just make sure its lubricated and tighten it slowly to prevent friction weakening the line. If the line kinks or looks "curly" after you have tied it its been tightened too quickly. Cut it off and retie it.

I would also endorse the Roman Moser tippet rings as the best. Some cheaper ones have sharp edges that can cut the line when under pressure leading to the possible loss of a good fish.

Rob, iv been using rings for all my leaders wet and dry. A simple blood knot with a min of 5 turns has never failed me in 30 years approx.Once you bed the knot down you should have no probs.

I have been using lureflash rings for years with no problem. "stillwater" ones slice the line. As for Knot, 5 turn blood un tucked.I am using 15lb maxima as butt section and this has never come undone.

Rob

Sorry but forgot to ask but are those tapered leaders and tippet material made of fluoro or mono? as if fluoro blood knots are barrel type and will cut into it,go uni safe bet all round

Thanks all, some really helpful replies

I'll have another read through them tonight when I'm back infront of my gear and have a play around.

Thanks again, Rob.
