Default fly for perch?

Theres a still water very local to me (walking distance & not a club water) which has perch and other course fish in it and it is free to fish, just the job for a hour or so casting practice too. I am thinking of trying to catch some perch while doing so,what kind of fly or flies should i use and how?, i thought of floating line, something bright and flashy with a quick retreive! Whats your thinking on this?

Ps its only 10 foot deep max has a few reeds round and not very clear.

cheers micky

Morning micky, I was watching a guy catching rudd using a very small black dry fly with a floating line and ten foot leader. Might work for perch, but then I don't coarse fish so unsure of feeding habits.

Your instinct is right - bright flies. You might want to read the article here:

Micky
The few times I've caught Perch have been unintentional, and they were caught on an olive damsel nymph and a dark maribou dressed fly.
But they are such vociferous little buggers they will take most anything that moves in the water,so your thoughts are correct.
Good luck
Gary

I caught over a dozen from a local reservoir the other day while trout fishing, on a small nymph (copper headed fox squirrel) fished in exactly the same way that brought me a few trout.
The only thing different was the take. The trout takes were confident 'draw aways', while the perch takes were insistent 'tap taps' that only turned into hook-ups if I continued with the slow retrieve.

the two best perch flies iv'e found over the years are 'apetizer' and 'jack frost'
the white and red seem to represent fry.

From my course fishing experiences (which I know alot about) i find that perch like red and silver. So if you where tying your self use:

sizes 10-14 hooks
red body with silver/gold/copper coloured rib
black stuff also works well in small doses.
