Oh! I clicked on this, thinking it might be about coarse fishing with flies, or put another way, fly fishing for coarse fish, a very fine way to spend some happy days if you have access to coarse fishing.

This topic was done to dead in a previous thread. Only coarse fisherman would fail to understand that fly fishing with the help of a bite indicator, for trout, is still fly fishing.

The dictionary definition of coarse fishing is:-

Coarse fishing is a term used in the United Kingdom and Ireland for angling for coarse fish, which are those types of freshwater fish other than game fish (trout, salmon and char).

I agree this topic has been over disscused, float fishing with a fly rod is not for me but if it helps catch you fish and you enjoy it carry on , each to thier own and all that

Why not even take it a step further and use loose-feed to attract the trout to your swim, and last Tuesday I found an imitation "sweet-corn fly" at Ranskill but, hey, it's still "fly-fishing"

Hi Tommy Ruffe

Most fly fisheries and clubs prohibit the use of ground bait and no self respecting fly fisher would dream of using it. So why even suggest that bite indicators are one and the same they are not.

Flies and lures often imitate aquatic insects and any lure that is made to look like a coarse fisherman's bait is frowned upon or prohibited. The fly fishers that stoop to these lengths are not sporting individuals, they are nothing better than poachers, and give true fly fishermen a bad name. Pleased don't tar us all with the same brush.
