Default Question.

Hello. I am a very recent convert from coarse to game so please excuse my ignorance, just been looking at Dever Springs/Spring Lake and it states no lures. What is classed as a lure is it a type of fly and how would i recognise it as such?.
Thank you colboro.

This is a tricky distinction to make.

What they really mean is no "lure stripping" style fishing and/or no using great big flies (usually long shank hooks) that are not any kind of attempt to imitate a natural lifeform. Boobies, wagglers and the like would definitely be frowned upon.

Most flies that we use could be transformed into lures if we fished them that way. Take the classic damsel nymph - typically an olive imitation of the natural with an enticing tail. What could be more imitative if we see damsel flies around the water? Similarly, the fairly big mayfly nymph, which needs to be that size to match the natural. However, strip these flies like a lure and then they are a lure.

I would suggest that you just fish it in an imitative fashion, with whatever fly (within the size limits) that you feel is going to deceive the fish because of it being a food imitation. If you start appealing to the trout's aggressive attack instincts with a fast moving fly, then you are moving into the lure arena.

Captainpacific has hit the nail on the head as far as dever is concerned.I've fished it on a few occasions and watched people stripping flies and even saw someone told they couldn't fish it anymore.Your far better off walking around the lakes stalking fish or ambushing them using stalking bugs or heavy nymphs. It's a great fishery well looked after and man when you see some of those subs swimming round your eyes are gonna pop out your head,my two PB's have come from dever a 17lb 4oz bow and a 14lb brown, have fun

It's a bit of both really, general rule of thumb if its small and drab it's a nymph and should be fished slowly,if its big and bright it's a lure and should be stripped ( although these can fished slowly ie cold weather )

No worries, their are loads of people on here who are only to willing help, enjoy your day.Like i said it's a great fishery, your best bet is to take your time and don't panick when you see a large fish, watch it's rout their creatures of habit and lay in wait for it,catapult your fly let it sink and when the fish is near lift it from the bottom and give it a tweak, watch the fishes reaction and strike

Hello.
Put the same question to Dever Springs and received this reply,"we class lures generally as big and bright(looking like christmas decorations) normally anything over1/2 inch".
colboro..
