Default reel advice

I really appreciate the help I am getting from the guys on this forum,,,, the internet has some good uses!!

I wonder what people think about a reel,,,

Greys Grxi Fly Reel

When I fished last time, I only used the reel to carry my line along the river bank,,,, but I like the look of this reel,,,,,,,,,

Sonik make some great reels suitable for both river and stillwater,or take a look a grey's new GX range ( not sure if they go down to weights suitable to use on rivers though ) but in your rod thread you did mention stillwaters

never owned a GRXi so cant make a comment on them

Sorry Richard, not a big fan of the GRXi, the drag on mine was rubbish.
The Sonik SK3 is a far better reel IMO.
The Okuma Airframe is another well thought of reel.

The SK3 seems to be #7/8

I was thinking of getting #5/6,,,, for fishing rivers, and some still water work

Woudl #7/8 be more suitable???

No probably a bit big for that TBH.
Have a look around though don't rush in, plenty of good reels come on here for sale regularly
Do you want a casette type reel ?

Default okuma airframe

hi richard

okuma airframe is an ok reel, had a couple myself. pretty bomb proof, would buy another. if you look on ebay you will find a reel plus 3 spare spools for around 35 quid. If memory serves, it is only in one size, 7-9wt.

only negative is that the star drag adjuster, which is nice and easy to use, also has a gap down the side which can catch the line - bit silly design, but otherwise light and strong.

I have come to the view that unless you are going for serious fish or you like a bit of tradition, then a simple reel will do all you need. Most reel design is about seeing how cleverly the manufacturers can waste aircraft quality alloy. Things of beauty, but really, what difference will a fraction of an ounce make? At the tip of the rod maybe.

Personal view only, priority of spend - rod, flies, line, waders, shades, sandwiches, reel. Oh, and licence and 12 bore. For research into cormorants.

but what the heck - boys' toys, eh?

Tight lines
Dan

Seconded Neil, a lovely bit of kit, simple and smart.
Just click and pawl mind, no drag for those big Rainbows on the stillwaters, otherwise great.

If the rod is un-balanced by the reel either too light or heavy a lot IMO,but wont go into that one as it's been covered on here more than once

As a good value reel I have always rated the Okuma reels.
