Default rod advice,,,

Greys G-Tec Fly Rod

what would people say about this?

your may have seen on a previous post,, I am planning to return to fly fishing after a 15-20 year abscence, so I am not a beginner,, but it will feel like it at first!!!!

I alwyas prefered river fishing, I would ideally like to only buy 1 rod at first, and buy a rod I can use both on still water and rivers,,, so a good all round rod really.
I might buy a smaller brook/small river rod at a later date,,,, (always like little rivers in the summer fishing dry flies upstream,,,

You do know that the G-Tec has been discontinued.you can pick them up for around £130.(if theres any left) Why not get something like a Reddington Red fly 2.and a shakespeare oracle for the wee streams.and you'll still have some money left.

I've the 9'6''#6,only had it since xmas ( prezzie of the wife ) so haven't used it a great deal yet what with all the sh1t weather of late.I like the action ( pretty fast ) but not so fast you cant fish with it,only caught around 6 fish on it so far but no drama's their.

I think your find most people who own one on this forum rate them

As 3lb G says the G-Tec is being discontinued as a 3 piece ( 4 piece has replaced it i imagine)

for 130 - 150 quid it's a good rod for the money, that retailed at around 230-250 before. I have the 7# in 9.6 foot for still waters. i had before the GRX-I in the same format and the rods are worlds apart; the GRX-I is notably heavier and felt faster and less forgiving in action. However, the G-tec took some getting used to for me (i'm a novice caster though).

i used a greys g series 9ft 5/6 up until january - nice, mid to tip action and i found it relatively easy to cast with - got a gtec 9ft 6wt and really noticed the difference much faster...struggled with it a bit at first but am just about managing now. somehow i thought i'd be casting further and more acurately with this rod but i wouldn't say it's the case

Have you thought about your casting stroke/timing,maybe that's the issue and not the rod?

I've never used a g series so wouldn't know about them, your right about the g-tec not being suitable for a beginner though grey ( although it's advertised as such ).I think as with most things in life it's just practice practice practice as it's the only way to learn. The first time i used a fast action rod i remember thinking blimey this is strange I'm never going to be able to get used to this or get it right, but i did eventually

I bought a 9foot6 #6 from John Norris just before Christmas, I'm a complete beginner and have fished a grand total of 2 times. The guy in the shop told me that although it is a fast action rod, to over weight the road with a #7 line as it would slow it down. This would then save having to buy a better rod after moving up from the beginner stage.
I really like my rod, my casting is getting better and when it gets predictable, I'll look at putting a #6 line on it.

I'd say go for it. Works for me
