Default Return to fly fishing - help and advice to catch up

Hi Guys (and gals)

I spent many happy days fly fishing (in Yorkshire at the time) as a boy, and teenager.
Probably a familiar story of girls, followed by wife, children work etc,,, means I havent been fly fishing for more than 15 years.

What I need, is some advice, getting back into it. I now live on the border of Cheshire and west Staffordshire. What I need to do (learn) is:

1. Where I can enjoy fishing in the area.

2. How rods have changed, I guess I will look to buy a 9' mid action rod, mostly for still waters.

3. How lines and reels have changed - I suspect not much,,,, ??

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be extremely grateful.

You are in the best place by coming onto this forum, there are some great waters near you as well, I would suggest a lesson first of all, but, make sure the instructor has some rods for you to try, have a play and decide if your it is up to the job or whether you need to buy new. If you skip the lesson then there are some good shops, Try Steve and Tony at Stockport Fly Fishing, they will let you try some rods out, some of the entry level kit that is around at the moment is tremendous, you can get 2 fully kitted out set ups for under £200 if you look around, decent kit as well.

On here is Grommit from Game fishing supplies and Neil from Angus Angling, they will always sort out a decent tackle deal for forum members

Good Luck and have fun

Chris

Hi Chris,

thanks for the quick reply.

Would a shop allow me to take a rod on approval? My plan was to practice in the back garden (I have a quite narrow, but also quite long garden).

I may be being foolish,,, but I am hoping that I will be able to pick up my casting fairly quickly. I fly fished roughly from the age of 11 to 18,,,,,,,,,, so its a long time ago,,

Interesting to see your comments on costs. My plan is to get a stillwater rod 1st, mainly because I dont think I am close to many good rivers here,,,, and catching stocked trout may be easier for a clumsy caster in the first few months.
I was thinking along the lines of £200 per set up,,,, if I can get suitable kit for less than that,,,,,,, all well and good,,,,,,,

although I dont want to buy a set up,, and want to upgrade everything 3 months later.

Was in much the same boat myself, coming back after some 30yrs.

You could look at these threads for a starter

Another Newbie!!

I think a lesson with a qualified pro. like Chris68 might be money well spent as they can give you tackle advice as well as the rest.

I think I am sold on the idea of a lesson with a pro,,,,

do they really describe (themselves?) as pro's now,,,, sounds like golf!!!!

Getting quite excited now I have taken the first step towards getting myself back out there,,,,,

any suggestions/recommendations for a lesson,,,,, I am based right on the Staffordshire, Shropshire and Cheshire border,,,, south of Crewe,,, north of Stafford, west of Stoke.

Perhaps you should start a new thread to get peoples attention. Bound to be some kind of list out there or a member in your area who can recommend someone.

Good hunting.

Richard - I'm in Cheshire, about a mile north of the Cheshire/Staffs border. Don't rule out river fishing - if you're prepared to drive an hour or so over the border into Wales, you'll have stacks of very decent river fishing available to you.

Or even to the peak district....
