Default Wikipedia's definition of fly fishing - can it be improved?

It's here

and immediately read it, I disagreed with the first sentence!

What do you think? Could it be improved? Being Wikipedia it is quite within our power to do so.

"Fly fishing is an angling method to catch fish in which an artificial fly is used."

I can find nothing wrong with the first sentence; short, concise and accurate. Why would you want it changed?

Fly fishing is set apart by the way the bait/imitation is sent to the target a long weighted line is used as opposed to the weight and split shot used by other forms of angling, an artifical fly can be presented under a bubble float after all and if you felt inclined a natural insect or maggot could be cast on a fly line

Idyllic photo. Wouldn't this be nearer the truth. (With apologies to Jon, whoever/wherever he is)

LOL,

Not that concise . . . . "Fly fishing is an angling method in which an artificial fly is used" is concise! Doesn't really say much though about exactly what fly fishing is (the distinctive casting, tackle, etc.) and I often use fry patterns or full-blown 'fishes' when piking. How do they figure? How is 'fly' defined? The only definition in the first sentence is that angling is a "method to catch fish". But we knew that already.

I do agree that it is a rather sloppy and at times, misleading read, especially if you try and read it from the perspective of someone not conversant with the sport. It is also rather narrow, outdated and idealised . . . ..

Be good to see it revised. I don't have the time but would be happy to assist and/or review?

Andy

My objection to the first sentence is that fly fishing is no longer about 'an artificial fly'. Streamers, saltwater crab patterns, blobs, heavy nymphs or dog biscuit patterns are all 'flies' to us lot, but are not what a non-fisher reading the definition would expect to find on the end of a fly fishers line.

IMO fly fishing is actually a 'delivery stystem' that enables small, relatively weightless 'lures' (which include artificial flies) to be cast a distance from the angler, by using the weight of the line to transfer energy enabling the 'lure' to be presented to fish at a distance. This is distinct from using the weight of whatever is to be cast to pull line from the spool of a reel, which is how most other fishing delivery systems work (pole fishing excepted).

Under the kind of definition I''d be happier with, Chech nymphing probably wouldn't count as fly fishing, but let's no go there.
