Default #5

Hi guys would an 8ft 6inch #5 rod be able to handle an average size sea trout or salmon or is it too small.

Terry.

Terry i would`nt fancy it myself but saying that you could probably land them but its going to take you some time, no bully boy tactics on such light tackle and the longer it takes to land them the longer it will take to revive the fish [if you are doing catch and release].I would personally use a #7 .

Agree with above. It will make little difference to your hook-up rate, but it is a little light and the welfare of the fish should dictate a heavier setup.

Terry,

Depending on the size of Salmon/ Sea Trout? You'll be OK with that outfit! But for SALAR fishing with a single hand-er, I would suggest a 9/10. or 11ft, rod of at least #6/7, weight.

Rhodri from Genwair was using a 9ft 5/6 wt rod for sea trout in Florida while I was there last spring and he had no troubles catching or landing them. Just wish I could hook them up like that
