Default Welded loops on fly lines

With a lot of fly lines coming with welded loops pre fitted what is the best way to attach the leader ?
Last season my fly lines had braided loops and i just tied the leader straight to them after seeing this done by hywel morgan instead of the usual loop to loop method but i have purchased a new rod and i'm replacing my lines some that ive bought come with the welded loop but will tying the leader straight to these damage the loop or will it be ok ?

Default Welded Loops

Mate,

My advice would be to cut the damn thing off!!! and replace with a braided loop....I do not like these welded loops....they are usually massive!!!

the factory fitted loops tend to hit the water like bricks, remove and replace with a braided loop, you'll be much happier, the worst iv had was on a rio midge tip

Thanks for the advice, some of the loops dont look too big is it worth taking them out for a practice even trying the loop to loop method before taking the knife to them.
Why do fly line manufacturers put these things on if they are so useless ?

Nearly in agreement there! Cut it off and replace it with a length of thick monofilament needle knotted to the end. No hingeing, better turn over and it will slip through your rod's guides very easily.

If you can attach you leader with a double cats paw, they are fine, It closes the loop and makes it a lot smaller thasn a normal clinch knot attachment, but the after market braided loops are better, just be carefull to get the correct size. I tend to not go with any loops, but prefer to attach the leader directly onto the line with a nail knot, and for light river work, I use the needle/nail combination knot but if you must have a loop, the braided loops are a lot better than welded loops.

Most lines I have had in the past, have had awful welded loops on, but the last Rio Selective Trouts I got seem much smaller and far neater.
I am going to give them a go this season, and if they aren't any good I'll chop them off then, and whip Roman Mosers on.
