IMHO long slow pulls with the odd twitch or if they are in the mood to chase ripped like a lure!

If your Apps isn't sinking (and you don't have a weighted one) try adding a heavy buzzer on a dropper. Leave a larger gap than normal, maybe 5-6 feet. I favour a tungsten beaded Okey-Dokey but any bead headed buzzer will do the same job. It can pick up the odd extra fish too.

Open your casting loop up a bit when casting heavy flies on the dropper to reduce the tangles.

The best thing I have found to sink leaders in fuller earth or any of the other pastes that are like this. Liquid sinkants tend to work for the first couple of casts before they lose their effectiveness.

But surely if the leader is sinking without the poly leader once it pull the leader down your going to get a u shaped sink which will stilll leave your flies high in the water

You are right of course. I'd made some assumptions about how the bloodworm was to be fished. I'll delete the post and put my brain into gear next time.
Thanks for pointing it out.

Something that I was taught from my dad was to rub two finger tips with mud and then run the leader through your finger tips, I have found this to work well... not perfectly but does the job and usually plenty mud around to use

Ah the Aps Bloodworm, a deadly early season fly and one that I would choose for my leader in the spring on stillwaters. In my opinion the best retrieve for this pattern is not, just let it drift round with one or two black buzzers on droppers. This technique works great in a gentle right to lift breeze, you just keep in contact with the flies and they will do the rest.
Regards,
Dave.

Here is a site that I use in conjunction with my fly tying classes, Not only does it show you the flies in differant forms it also tells you a bit about the entomology
of them and how to fish them.
Olive Apps Beaded Bloodworm
