Hi Terrance and welcome to the forum. In a nutshell, a tippet is the bit of line between your leader and your fly. So if you have a tapered leader from 10lb to 6lb, you could have a 4lb tippet to your fly.
Tapered leaders can help with the presentation of your fly. It would taper down from 10lb to 6lb for instance (or more probably be referred to in diameter) so that the energy created in the fly line from your cast, would transfer equally through the leader, allowing the fly to land more 'naturally' in the water.

A 'tippet' is a rather minor word of advice!

Most people will refer to the tippet as the section of line they use between fly line and fly.

Many will also refer to this as the leader.

I often refer to the long piece of line that you attach to the end of your fly line as the leader and the end to which you tie the fly as the tippet.

You can purchase purpose built tapered leaders which, as the name suggests, is a length of clear/ish nylon that has a larger diameter at the 'butt' section (attached to the fly line) and gradualy thins down towards then end to which you can then tie another length of tippet and then tie your fly on the end of that!

The leader is the piece that attaches between the flyline and the fly. Tippet is a component of the leader, and can be used for various purposses.
To adda section to the leader, so that you don't decrease the length everytime you change a fly. It is easier to replace a tippet section of the leader, than to replace the whole leader. It also allows to to vary the length of the leader according to various factors.
The taper is for the purpose of focussing the energy forward, to cause the leader to turn over, and to lay straight on the water. There are several situations where you don't need a tapered leader, and a straight leader, or parallel leader will be fine.
