Did you read "Moby Dick" cover to cover and still think it was about "fishing"?

Paxman's "Fish, Fishing and the Meaning of Life" is a collection of extracts from all over the place, may be a useful jumping off point for chasing up references.

The River Why - by David James Duncan

If its the symbolism of fishing your interested in, then this book will be right up your street.
They also made it into a film, which sadly went straight to DVD

Hi River Fly Fisher,

this book might be of interest to you:

A jerk on one end-reflections of a mediocre fisherman by Robert Hughes

Good luck with your dissertation!

Slightly off the point, but what is it about film with fishing in it (not specifically about fishing) ?
In everything else, filmmakers go for authentic detail, but get an ad. or a tv drama with a fisherman in it and invariably it is like something from the 1930s - camp stool, pork pie hat, canvas bag with leather straps, rod with a centre pin reel propped up on a forked stick.

Perhaps nobody in the media world goes fishing.

That would explain a lot.
