Default Fly fishing - is it a sport?

All here is a good friday afternoon question - my girlfriend keeps taking the p*** out of me every time I refer to my fly fishing as a sport. She says because it is not exercise and because I am not competing it is not a sport.

I figure I am outside - it is more physically tiring than darts (certainly) and golf (possibly!!!) therefore a sport.

What's the general consencus......

Angling is one of the true sports.

She could be confusing "games" with sports. Of the Olympic games only the events involving combat are actually sports, the rest are mere games.

I'd say more of a Hobby or A Relaxing Pass-time! The professional side of angling; and the competitive angler would like to think of fly fishing as a sport! I like to think of it as a progressive art exercise.

To be enjoyed.

Richardw is spot on. Fishing, hunting and hawking are sports; the various football disciplines, cricket, golf and so on are games.

I think of fly fishing as a field sport - a recreation carried out in the open countryside - along with hunting and shooting.

I see it as a hobby, past time and most enjoyable though very frustrating at times. Granted there is the competion side of things but for games, football etc? Should also include ludo, draughts and chess in with games.
hrr, has your girlfriend ever been fishing with you?
