When you have no idea, you really, really, need to try before you buy.sometimes a fast action will suit a beginner.but most times it will create some problems that you don't need.

You need a medium action rod. fast action is a tip action rod (bends in the tip section mainly) and not easy to control for a beginner. Medium action bends further into the rod and easier for a beginner to handle its more forgiving and less dependent on precise timing. Full action bends into the butt and a very slow action. My advice is get a lesson and at the same time try different rods before you buy.

Terry,

As has rightly been said, try before you buy. You don't want to make an expensive mistake.

And a fast actioned rod is not really what you want for river fishing.

If you can, hold off to for one of the big game and/or angling fairs. There will be loads of different options which, more importantly, you can have a go with! Furthermore, some dealers will offer really good deals on 'shop soiled' or ex demo rods that come with the usual guarantees. Alternatively ask your local dealers if they have the facilities for you to try a few different rods. I can't add any more that has already been said...testing is the main way you should go about selecting your new rod.
