I fished my club water today for the first time since before the freeze. I've had a busy couple of weeks, worked through the weekend and was getting a little cabin crazy. I spied a small window of opportunity and went for it. It's a very ordinary story but maybe the pictures will convince someone to get outside and enjoy a spot of Winter fishing.
It was a still morning, with mist hanging over Pendle Hill, and creeping down into the valley on and off. The frost was just melting when I pulled into the car park.
As I arrived at the water's edge Pendle was just peeping though the mist and looked a picture, so I took one!
At this time of year the only realistic method is sinking lines and lures, and as the bed of the reservoir is like a dry stone wall made of sharp edged grit-stone it's best not to snag the bottom so I tied on a small peach Booby. It came as a huge surprise to connect with a fish almost immediately. I'd half-expected a blank. I netted it and despatched it for the pot then settled into the rhythm of casting and slow, twitchy retrieves. Nothing for the next hour, not a pull!
A move brought a partial change of luck but I dropped it as it neared the net even though I'd kept a steady pressure on. They are real head-shakers and full of energy in the cold clear water. Another couple of moves then time for an exotic lunch of left over
Nasi-Goreng (Indonesian Fried Rice). I tried the top end for a change of angle and dropped another fish mid-fight. Nobody was in earshot to hear me swear, but I was smiling really. Time to pack up and get home in time for my Son getting back from school.
