Default Electric outboard size

Hi folks ,im lookin for advice on min thrust for an electric outboard for lough fishing.I have a petrol engine for the long journeys and the heavy work. The electric engine would be for stealth fishin and for keeping a drift offshore if the wind is contrary
Thanks Jemo

I suppose if your just using it for that a 36lb thrust would be fine and not use as much battery as say a 55lb one, that would more than likely get you back to home if your main motor went.
I guessing your using a 19' Sheelin or the like.

Whichever thrust you buy you will at some point wish you had bought more!! I bought a small one wnen they came out in the 70s or 80s and it was fine for gentle ripple condidions and just recently upgraded to a 55 lb thrust, which at times I wish was bigger My advice for what it's worth....buy the biggest you can and make sure you also buy the biggest and best battery you can afford ... at least 110 AH of the leisure type i.e. deep cycle type if that's the proper term. Others will differ of course, hense the wide market options, but in general buy the very best you can afford and you wont go far wrong......and you will always want a bigger one

Totally agree with 11Foot. No one ever regretted buying an electric that was too big. You can always throttle down. Also, the cost of buying one or two models up the line is minimal compared to the cost of buying one that's too small, selling it at a loss, and then buying right the second time.

Can anyone tell me why not to go for one of these:
BISON 55'/lb ELECTRIC OUTBOARD TROLLING MOTOR & CASE on eBay (end time 04-Feb-11 12:06:10 GMT)

or something from these guys eg:
Daiwa 54lb Electric Outboard Motor with LCD Monitor - £159.99 : LochsideTackle, Online Fishing Tackle Store

Jarvis Walker Watersnake ETW Venom 54lb Electric Outboard Motor + Free Propeller - £169.99 : LochsideTackle, Online Fishing Tackle Store

..... rather than spending almost double on a Minn Kota of equivalent power?

I think the Bison motor is what rhino was, if so Iv had 1 for 7/8 years maybe more and its a great piece of kit that has never let me down, in fact its saved me big time in the past.
Thing is with all these motors!! there only as good as the battery running them.

Yes, I think the "Bison" is a generic motor - certainly not made by Bison. You can see the same one here:

electric outboard motors, kayak motors, canoe motors, lifejackets, buoyancy aids,12volt air pump,

and here:

ELECTRIC OUTBOARD MOTOR dinghy boat saltwater-use 55lbs on eBay (end time 31-Jan-11 18:20:59 GMT)

Yes get the best leccy outboard you can afford, the Minn Kota maximiser feeds energy in pulses and saves battery power, but as already said the battery has to be up to the job so get one with 110 aph or better still get two.

Battery maintenance should not be overlooked..
get a decent charger that will trickle charge on a maintenance mode
They dont like being completely drained
