May see you there on the 27th! havent been since christmas and gagging to wet a line.

Now is ABSOLUTELY prime time at Lechlade. wait for some settled weather and then get out there. there are some very very big fish in there and more going in, so fish slow, fish marabou, and fish deep. There are hot spots all over the lake, but to shorten the odds of a whopper, try the follow ing areas.

1 - First swim you come to on the lake. tricky casting but get your fly under theoverhanging willow there and there's always a big brown to be had.

2 - second pontoon on the big lake. again, tricky casting, but cast at the island and retrieve slowly. it's deep here and full of browns. (Ive had them to just under 16lb here)

3 - NExt swim at the end of the island (there's a rubbish bin here) cast anywhere, but particularly to the tree over hanging on the island, if not here cast to the right at the promontory.

4 - Margins. ALWAYS look right in the margins, some of the very bigest fish are less than 2M from the bank.

5 - Bays. There are 5 bays on the lake. each will always hold a better stamp of fish than the open swims.

6 - Last swim by the house. Less good than of old. theyve removed the tree.atill well worth a cast thoug.

Cheers
Alex

The closed season for brown trout in enclosed stillwaters was recently abolished in England and Wales, putting them on the same standing as rainbows in enclosed put and take fisheries.

we had our annual club winter day at Lechlade yesterday, and the water is clear and in great condition. Still some ice but generally fishable everywhere.
Usually at this time of year the first part of the lake fishes well, but yesterday the best fishing was in the second part of the lake. Average size of the fish was down a little, probably around 6-7lb, but a number of doubles came out, including several brownies. Fish in great condition.
As BB said, best method was to fish slow and deep. Most of our fish came to black or white nomads or minkies fished either on fast intermediate or di-3 lines. Also keep moving and look for fish close in. Quite a lot of big browns either side of the "ferry" bridge, and also under the trees n the top left hand bay.
Enjoy your day, we certainly did.
Paul

Not sure exactly, i'd say it's typically 8-12 feet with a few deeper holes. there's a deep hole up by the house, and another off the boat-house at teh far end. As paul said, try the bays for the browns. anywhere out of the open water..

Good luck. will try and post a pic of a Lechlade Brownie..

I should add, obviously even though it is not now a legal requirement, some fisheries may choose to retain a closed season - presumably Lechlade are taking full advantage!
