Hi all, im looking to get a cheap 4/5# fly rod for use on the river aswell as still waters, It has to be cheap as im only going to be using the rod part time and cant justify spending a fortune on one, ive heard good things about the flextec rods on ebay ? not so sure tho, Any reccomendations would be great thanks Ryan

Hi Ryan

I just recently bought a 3wt fly rod for similar reasons, but mostly because i spent a lot of money on one and it snapped like a twig on the fourth or fifth time i used it. So i was determined to get the cheapest one i could and see how that compares, and quite frankly unless you have the money, i dont see the necessity of spending large amounts of money on a rod, when one which is dead cheap and has a similar action, works just the same.

I bought a Vantage 3wt off ebay and paid under twenty quid. So far, its the best 3wt i've ever had. Casts like a dream. I've also heard good reports of the shakesphear range. The flextex range are good, but their price has gone up to what you used to be able to get them for.

I'm not saying by all means that expensive rods are not worth their money, there are some rods that i would love to own, its just they cost the earth...

If you are prepared to step up to 5/6 wt, John Norris have Shakespeare Trion rod at £29.99 with one of their own floating W/F lines thrown in (rrp £19).
(I've bought a couple of the Trions and like them)

Default cheap rod

Hi tidy_fishing,I have two flextec rods in my collection and can say they are well worth the money for build quality, value and of course usability. The model i use for stillwater/stream fishing is CDX 66 10ft 4piece #5/6.
Tacklediscounts have an e-bay site, you get 10% off your second order.
Happy Hunting!
Pete

Hi Ryan,

Have a look at this link

Angling Times

This was in the latest Trout Fisherman magazine. Was thinking of getting it myself for the same reasons as you. As a spare as well. Thought it didn't look too bad and could be used on rivers and stillwaters too. The fact you get a couple of lines too seems quite good.

Any thoughts anyone?

Thanks for the all the reply guys, looks like its between the shakespeat oddesey and the flextec then, mac i seen that offer also looks like a good deal, Another reason i dont want to spend alot is the local river i fish you have to be liek action man climbing through trees and bushes to fish most of it and over the years ive snapped or damaged lots of rods ( expensive rods ) so its got to be a cheap one this time !
