Default Best Fishing Destination

Hi Everyone,
I was just wondering where do you think the best flyfishing is in the whole world and if you could share personal experiences that would be great.
Cheers,
Oliver.

Hi Oliver,

To be truthful, I wouldn't swap my home patch for anywhere in the world!!

But, I suppose it depends on what your looking for. I think we have the best Brown Trout fishing in the world. Why go anywhere else?

TBH it's an impossible question, depending on what you're looking to catch. For me it'd be a week on the Alta, in Northern Norway, at the beginning of July, end of. Sadly, i will never be able to afford it, so i'll just have to stick with the dream.

I'm with Mostyn on this. I guess I've fished for long enough now that the fish are becoming less important and my home patch will do for me. I'm not alone in thinking my bit of the world is one of the better bits for fishing, Negley Farson (who had been around a bit) had this to say when writting about the rivers Exe and Barle:

"I have never caught a fish there worth talking about, except for thr pleasure in catching it. But I know some of the rocks and ledges and stickles in those rivers as well as I know my own door step. I love that country. I love the life it holds - the bogs, the spinneys; yes, even the almost vertical hills where you slip and slide in the snow of a wintery sunset. I love this English scene."

And when you really get to know them better these waters can give you fish worth talking about

Got to be the home patch...costs less than a cheap rod for a whole season, from house to fishing is about 15 mins, doesn't involve air travel, and you have no inflated expectations of it so you can just relish your fishing. You can also fish when conditions are just right ie no lottery of turning up and finding a spate.

Default NZ all the way

NZ all the way for trout... The rivers are unbelievable and i can only say that the flyfishing in Ireland doesn't even come close.... It will blow your mind. The freedom and beauty of the place is fantastic. All the rivers are free to fish (excluding a small region on the North Island)... No bullshite like there is here with permits costing a fortune every day. In Ireland there are so many rivers that i have never fished as i can't afford it or wouldn't justify spending a day or twos wages to fish them.. It's not elitist there. If you get to the water first then its all yours... And there are thousands of rivers to fish and just about all of them have trout and some of them big trout... (trout in some rivers average over 5lb, and they aren't quite as picky at feeding as they are here!))

You do have to buy a license, but it costs 50 odd euros per season... the best money i've ever spend.

I posted a thread on my last trip a while back. Do a search through my old posts and you should find it....

Cheers
JJ

Cheers,
Oliver.
On the right night, in late July or early August, the long flat water above Black Barn weir on the Haddon Estate's Peacock water is possibly the most wonderful dry fly fishing. It is difficult to imagine a better place.

Never say never BB.
I too am very happy with my own back yard so to speak, but if I'm honest there are a number of destinations I would love to try at least once.
NZ and Patagonia are two of them, perhaps Northern Spain as well, which is a definite possibility.
