Default Intermediate v Floating

Hi

Only been fishing for 3 months and started with a floating line. After a couple of blank days I started to catch fish. I enjoy listening to the many really helpful and friendly fellow fishermen I have meet. One suggested that I swap to an intermediate line which I tried. (Cortland 444)

I had one day of 5 hours with several takes, a few fish turned and a couple lost approaching the net but no fish. The next session I tried again for 3 hours the same things happened. I switched back to my floating line for an hour and landed 4 fish.

It seems like on the intermediate I cannot set the hook properly. Is this due not visually picking up the take or there being more friction with this line delaying the strike? Should I keep practicing with the intermediate? Are their any special techniques I should be employing?

Any comments or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks.

If it were me I'd carry on using/practicing with the Intermediate as well as the floater.Maybe try sweeping your rod to one side harder whilst pulling the line down with the none rod hand,as like you say you are having to strike and connect with the line/fish through water. You should be able to feel through the line if a fish decides your fly is worth a meal, also watch the line between rod tip and water.

Welcome to the forum by the way

Neil

Stick with the intermediate, it will help you get to the fish when they are a bit deeper than your floater allows (esp if you are fairly new to fishing and use short-ish leaders).

I used a clear intermediate for my 4 hour session today and did miss a few takes but with practice you will get the knack of watching the line between water and rod tip as well as feeling takes in your line hand. I make sure I am constantly retrieving line, even if it is very very very slowly, so that I am always in contact with flies.

Blot,

You could try an Airflo sixth sense inter. hook up rate is very high with these lines.

I can second that, I've got the 0.5 and the fast glass and both are great you feel everything. The cortland 333 pro intermediate (clear one) is a good line too and fairly cheap, seems to hit just the right depth for the fish at times. If u can afford the sixth sense fast glass though I'd go for that, that and the floater will cover you for just about anywhere.

I don't think forking out and changing your line is gonna solve the problem, just persevere with what you have got, keep learning, watching, feeling and it will come.

The presentation of your flees on the floater just happened to work better on this particular day, that's all.

This has nothing to do with the line, as it could happen with any line. The line has very little to do with the ability to set the hook. The hook is set by the angler on the other end, and not the line. The type of hook you use might also have a role to play. but generally when you get the "bumps", and cant get the fish to eat it, it might mean that they are simply tasting it, to see what it is. You were probably fishing weighted lure or streamer patterns, where you might have had better success with unweighted smaller naturals, retrieved in a different way. Most of the time, it will take a small adjustment and variation of the retrieve. Yes, try different techniques. If however, a line change gives you more confidence, then by all means , try it.
