Default Shooting Heads?

Hi All,

I have been thinking about dabbling in shooting heads but I have never really even seen them used. I have spoke to many who rate their use and have grown really curious and, in theory I think they could be useful.

I am initially thinking for my #10 for my pike flies but I also fish for trout on large northern (windswept) ressies and also in UK saltwater with a #9. All of which I think (with my limited understanding!) could benefit with the use of them.

I would appreciate your input, pros and cons, what to look for and avoid.

Many thanks in advance & Happy new year.

Marc

I have just made my first serious shooting head for use at Farmoor 2 and booby fishing. I owe Steve Cullen alot for some sound advice and i used my creation for the first time yesterday........I have NEVER cast so far!!

Whilst i was making it, i took a measuring wheel down to my local park to see just how far it would go. I was constantly breaking the 40 yrd mark. The longest i measured was 44 yrds. I placed a bit of tape onto the running like to mark up where 50yrds was. Fired it off the wall at farmoor yesterday and on the first attempt the tape slapped straight into the rings!!! It is awsome!!! Just ought to point out that Farmoor is pretty low at the moment so i was stood about 10ft above water level and had a favourable wind.

All i did was attach around 40ft of 9wt DI8 to 20lb Amnesia running line. It's a bit of a rod breaker and i would recomend that you try any full line to make sure that it doesn't overload your chosen rod before you decide where to cut it down. The DI8's density ensures that it drags the running line for miles and it's also really useful when nailing boobys close to the bottom

Good luck with your creation!

A bit of practice Phil and you'll be casting as far as me

Have you hooked a fish at 40 yards plus yet?

In fairness to Phil, he is already a pretty awesome caster with standard #7 or #8 kit, so can just imagine what he could do with a well balanced shooting head set up.

From the bank at Farmoor and such likes, 45 to 55 yards is often necessary and standard kit just aint gonna cut the mustard at times.

Twiddling or static boobies fished deep at these distances result in plenty fish on such venues.

It aint pretty but it's sure as hell effective.

The Pirate.
