Default water temperature

hello here is 1 for discussion, for those of you who fish rivers and lakes through the winter months does the water temp realy matter for fish to feed, my dear friend richard luckock sadly passed and avid user of a water thermometer would take a reading and if below a certain temperature would wait until the sun warmed up the water, so a lot of coffee was drunk between us and fishy tales spoken, this gives rise to why are the pike not feeding also many trips to my local thames and not a taker, or is it me would rather watch others enjoy. regards flyfishy61

At the moment I would say that the snow melt which is carrying salt from the roads is doing more damage to the conditions than the temps, normally I would be out Pike fishing this time of year on the rivers but I know from experience that snow melt is a killer, what we need is some rain and a flush through and a settled period of milder weather.

Deleted for reason given.

Hi Gorden,

I think the temperature does matter, air and water temperature can have an effect I believe!! Have you noticed that when the sun comes out and the air temperature warms the surface water, the fish rise far more freely, even when there's no hatch about, if you present your fly so as to look natural, you can sometimes induce a fish to rise to it!

When the water temperature is very low, then the catch success is far less!

I don't use a thermometer, I can tell when it's too cold; and when it's time to leave the river alone.

Czech Nymph, I avoid if possible when fishing the winter months, but if it's extremely cold even the Czech nymphing will fail to produce.

So in answer to your question?? Yes! I believe Temperature does play a big part in the activities of how fish feed, or not feed.

hello that is very interesting on your salt water theory something i did not consider and as the thames and most rivers are fed by many inlets, thankyou i will ponder on this and see if other members have their own ideas. kind regards flyfishy61
