Default Falkland Islands

Heavens, it's been a long time since I ventured onto these threads. Anyway, here I am again, at present in the Falkland Islands for the next three years.

I'd be happy to hear from anyone with reminiscences of their fishing on the Islands, or, indeed, from anyone thinking of coming out here. Second sea trout run has not yet started, but there are plenty of mullet (Eleginops maclovinus) about, which, on their day, take a fly avidly.

My partners dad was posted in the falklands a few years back, hes not an angler but did go out with a friend who is while he was there. From what I gather the fishing is staggering, 7-8lb sea trout being the norm, would love to have a bash there one day. Although I'm unlikely to ever get there. Make the most of it

A blast from the past! Welcome back, although you'll soon notice that many of the 'old names' are no longer here.

Falklands seatrout ... you lucky ******!

Something that has always puzzled me a little regarding the Falklands sea trout?

Is there no brown trout fishing in the smaller rivers and streams in any part of Falkland?

Yep, there are brown trout. The fish were all stocked as browns in the forties and fifties. Some stayed in the rivers: they're mostly very small. Some went to sea. I've had three trout so far, all from estuaries, and all looking very like browns - slobs, I suppose you'd have to call them. I'll be interested to see what the STs look like. Roll on February!

I went to the FI a couple of times but did not fly fish in those days. The mullet fishing in the creeks was superb, I used to use ledgered bacon rind as digging for bait could be bit exciting. I did get hooked into something fairly monstrous that took me for a run of about half a mile and snapped off on 10lb leader, never got a look at it though.

regards

Vince

If it was one of ours, it would probably have run aground

Glad you're still here! Falklands are a bit like West Penwith really, but with more sea trout. Great place.

Exclamation Internet wise, this is the type of thread that always amazes me.

Considering where you are ... you're up and running.

Amazing stuff.
