Default A new year A new decade

Compliments of the season, and may the next year be a good one for all.

For all we ought to have thought
and have not thought,
all we ought to have said
and have not said,
all we ought to have done
and have not done,
may the coming year rectify the wrongs of the last!

regards
bert

So the previous decade lasted for only 9 years, then (01.01.2001 - 31.12.2009)?

Doesn't surprise me. Some people think the 21st century started on 01.01.2000

I think it's a generally held belief that 2010 was the start of the new decade, as the year 2000 was the start of the last. 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, ten years, which would make 2010 the new decade. Of course a decade is purely a measurement of ten years, making the whole point subjective.

I can see this one running and running.

Anyway; happy new year.

The 1st full decade in the modern calendar comprised the years from 1 to 10, the 2nd decade from 11 to 20, the 3rd 21 to 30 and so on. So while the "1960s" comprises the years 1960 to 1969, the "197th decade" spans 1961 to 1970.

Technically then, the decade started on 01.01.2011... but... say for music or fashion purposes, when you refer to the 1970s you refer to the decade 1970 - 1979.

It's all immaterial anyway as a decade can refer to any set of 10 years ;-)

Ok - go back to year dot. 1st Jan 0000, the start of the 1st decade (and the 1st century, millenium etc). Year 1 ends on 31st Dec 0000, and year 2 begins Jan 1st 0001. The end of the 10th year, and therefore the decade, is 31st Dec 0009. 1st of Jan 0010 is the start of the 2nd decade.

Hinges on whether you think there was a year 0000 though :-).

Surely the first year would be called 0001.
When you go fishing and catch your first fish you don't call it the 0 you call it the 1st, why should years be any different

Think about starting a stop watch - it only registers a count once the alloted time interval is over and done with. So, although something is happening in the first second, the stopwatch is actually registering zero in the second count.
