Default fly fishing expert

hello to all, as a newby on this forum i ask my self why do i like fly fishing, years ago it was to catch trout now it is to enjoy with out worry. since i started it has become big business and many so called experts have followed on with their own ideas writing in trout fisherman and such like giving advice and becoming something of a celebrity at most fishing shows, well there are many more who have the expertise but stay silent only giving their wisdom to those who value true kindness. i started river fishing for trout 50 years ago and still water trout fishing at peckhams copse sussex for £1 per day, since then have fly fished many lakes, reservoirs, and rivers gaining knowlege and understanding without the need to question my own love of our sport, now i can spend time by the river or lake and not worry to fish only taking in the natural beauty of my surroundings in our most beautifull months spring, summer, etc and i hope to have many more years to do. so my advice to anyone man and lady beginner or not its not the price of your rod or reel, its not to worry if your home made fly does not compare to the expert. just go fishing so tight lines to you all in 2011.

Hi Gorden,

I agree with you! I started fly fishing about 55, years ago, I was introduced to it by a friend of my Father. Bill Bruin was his name, he gave me an old Green-heart rod an old reel with a silk line! I used them without any maintenance until I was about 15, then had a glass rod and a new plastic fly line. learned a lot from Bill Bruin, all those years ago; and I'm still learning! There's always something new to learn, or re-learn something you'd forgotten about. I'm no expert; but I know quite a lot about fly fishing and I hope to learn a lot more!

Can you ever be classed as an expert?

I have fished the same water two days in a row, had success with one method one day and then won't get a touch with the next so with so many variables I wouldn't like to think anyone can walk up to any water on any given day and catch a fish on the first cast every time. Not even the first 5 casts.

I think you can become extremely experienced but I wouldn't say an expert.

More or less what Lao Tzu meant when he wrote in the Tao Te Ching

“Those who say, do not know. Those who know, do not say”

Thought For The Day

Blaster Bates definition of the word expert was to split it into 2 syllables, so "Ex" as in used to be, & spurt is a drip under pressure....

Oi! I resemble that remark,

Just to reinforce the hypothesis stated above .... Sebastian Coe's coach was his father, Peter. Doubt if he could have run 800m any faster than me but boy what a coach!

Sorry Paul,

But it's an old saying; I merely quoted it. Thank God for those who give of their time to teach, coach, or just pass on the knowledge needed to succeed in life.

I guess we're all 'experts' when we're catching, and amateurs when we're not.

It's all a question of how much it matters to you
